Business: Sea shipping companies take cargo to the air

The world’s biggest shipping lines are following their customers into the air. Carriers flush with cash are buying their own fleets of cargo planes, as they add air service for big clients willing to pay extra to get around supply-chain snarls at sea. The ocean operators say they aren’t looking to compete directly with air cargo giants, but are tapping into a market that grew 18.7% last year.

Oil and gas giant BP has reported a massive upswing in full-year net profit, its highest in eight years, supported by soaring commodity prices. The British energy giant also posted fourth-quarter net profit of $4.1 billion, beating expectations.
