(670 The Score) Cubs third baseman Patrick Wisdom has been a revelation and big boost for a team that was in need of it. In the process, he’s also making some history.
Wisdom homered twice and drove in three runs in Chicago’s 4-3 win at San Francisco on Sunday afternoon, which marked another big day in his hot start to 2021. In doing so, Wisdom became just the third player in MLB history to hit seven homers in his first eight starts with a team, according to the Elias Sports Bureau and as relayed by ESPN reporter Jesse Rogers.
The other two players to accomplish the feat were the Rockies’ Trevor Story in 2016 and the Reds’ Aristides Aquino in 2019.
Wisdom, 29, is hitting .412 with seven homers, 10 RBIs and a 1.533 OPS while appearing in 13 games this season. The Cubs promoted him to their big league club on May 25.
“If we can just get it to Wisdom with guys on base, we’ll be all right,” Cubs outfielder Ian Happ joked Sunday, according to the Athletic.
The Cubs originally added Wisdom last August after the Mariners designated him for assignment, then Chicago re-signed him on a minor league deal in January after he had reached free agency.
Wisdom’s seven homers are the fourth-most on the Cubs, trailing only Javier Baez (14), Kris Bryant (13) and Willson Contreras (nine).
