Delta a category 2 hurricane headed for Gulf with 'large uncertainty in the track and intensity'

Tropics

Hurricane Delta's winds have steadily increased in the Caribbean. The category two storm had winds of 110 miles per hour as of this morning.

"The hurricane is in the midst of a very impressive rapid intensification episode," National Hurricane Center Senior Hurricane Specialist Eric Blake said.

He says while it is now forecast to become a category four hurricane with winds of 130mph, forecasters are still not sure about that strength or where Delta will go.

"While there is large uncertainty in the track and intensity forecasts, there is a significant risk of dangerous storm surge, wind, and rainfall hazards along the coast from
Louisiana to the western Florida Panhandle beginning Thursday night or Friday."

Southeast Louisiana remains in the middle of the forecast cone with spreads from Louisiana through Mississippi, Alabama and part of the Florida Panhandle.

Blake stresses that somewhere along the coast, Delta could bring severe impacts.

"Residents in these areas should ensure they have their hurricane plan in place and monitor updates to the forecast of Delta."
