A new analysis from Georgetown University says five major clusters of unvaccinated people could put the whole United States at risk of another Covid outbreak as the virus continues to mutate. And one of the clusters encompasses a large part of Louisiana.
The study focused on counties and parishes with large populations and low vaccination rates.
In addition to Louisiana, the clusters encompass parts of Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas.
High transmission areas are known to be breeding grounds for variants that could adapt an immunity to the current Covid vaccinations available. Therefore, these clusters could spell trouble for the hard-fought progress in fighting the outbreaks in the U.S.
"We know that if you give the virus the opportunity to circulate and replicate, you give it the opportunity to generate more variants," Dr. Anthony Fauci, President Joe Biden's chief medical adviser, told CNN.
The five clusters include more than 15 million people combined. CNN reports that the vaccination rate of this group to be only 27.9%.
The national rate is 47.6%
