Landlord shot, killed two tenants over unpaid rent: police

A disagreement between a landlord and his tenants led to a fatal shooting that killed two people and sent another to the hospital in critical condition, the Las Vegas Police Department Tuesday.

Police said the suspect in custody -- a 70-year-old man -- is the landlord at the home where the shooting occurred early Tuesday. Police Lt. Ray Spencer said the three victims were tenants but told reporters it’s possible he also lived in the house.

Investigators believe the dispute involved past due rent the tenants owed.

Officers responded to reports of gunshots at the residence, finding one woman shot to death in the front yard. A man stumbling out of the house had been shot nine times, police said.

Authorities said the suspect holed up in the home for some time. Officers reported finding a second woman dead inside the house after the landlord surrendered.

Paramedics rushed the man with nine gunshot wounds to the hospital, where he’s in critical condition.

Nearly 6 million households are behind on rent because of the pandemic, owing an estimated $20 billion. Congress has already allocated roughly $46 billion in rental relief, but most of the money has not been dispersed.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention extended its eviction moratorium through September, but it already faces challenges in court.
