The New Orleans Police Department says a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office deputy died when his motorcycle and a car collided on Airline Highway.

New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick says the deputy was part of an escort for a funeral procession.

"We are here as partners, as friends," said Chief Kirkpatrick. "A fallen officer in one agency is a fallen officer for all of us."

Investigators said that while stopping traffic and coming to a stop in the roadway as part of the procession, the deputy was struck from behind by another automobile.

Both the deputy and the driver of the car were taken to the hospital. The deputy was pronounced dead. The driver's condition was not released.

NOPD says at this time, no charges have been filed, but the incident remains under investigation.

The crash happened before noon, in the 9200 block of Airline, between Palmetto and the Orleans/Jefferson parish line.

Chief Kirkpatrick released the following statement:

The New Orleans Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, the deputy’s family, loved ones, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.

Law enforcement is a close-knit profession, and we stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners at JPSO. When one of our own is hurting, we all hurt. This loss is felt far beyond agency lines.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the deputy’s family and with every deputy and officer who is grieving this tragedy. We honor the service, sacrifice, and commitment that define our profession, and we remain united in support of our partners during this time of mourning.
