New Orleans Fire officials say firefighters rescued a man from a home that was damaged when a fire spread to the man's home.

It happened Saturday afternoon in the 3100 block of Toledano St., between S. Galvez St. and S. Claiborne Ave.

Firefighters say an abandoned house caught fire, and spread to the house next door. That structure was already collapsed by the time firefighters made it to the scene. The fire also ignited a high-pressure natural gas line nearby, sending flames shooting 15-20 feet high into the air (above, left).

"Firefighters had to assist an adult male living at 3209 Toledano in exiting his home," NOFD said. The flame spewing from the gas line was preventing the man from evacuating his house.

"Firefighters went through the heat and entered the home to escort the man out a side door," fire officials said.

New Orleans EMS treated the man for minor injuries on the scene.

No other injuries were reported.
