A pair of girls from New Orleans, ages 15 and 11, are accused of stealing cars from elderly residents in Arabi.
The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office says the girls knocked on vehicle owners' doors and asked if they could use the phone. After being allowed in, the girls swiped the car keys, then stole the vehicle after leaving the residence, according to the sheriff's office.
The first crime was reported around 4 p.m. Thursday in the 300 block of Angela Ave. The second incident occurred a few hours later, in the 2100 block of Aycock St.
Authorities say the suspects were identified through eyewitness accounts and surveillance video. Both were booked today with simple robbery, two counts of theft of a motor vehicle, and one count of theft. The sheriff's office says the 15-year-old was also booked on an outstanding warrant in St. Bernard Parish.
"St. Bernard Parish Sheriff James Pohlmann urges residents not to let a stranger’s youth lure them into a false sense of security," the sheriff's office warned in a statement. "Sheriff Pohlmann encourages citizens to remain vigilant, and report any suspicious activity in their neighborhood."
