1st suspect booked in death of grandmother in Xavier campus shooting
Orleans Parish Prison

The first of four people wanted in connection with the May 31 shooting death of an 80-year-old grandmother last month after the Morris Jeff Community School graduation is in custody, records show.

Police booked 18-year-old Brandon Rock late Friday night. Charges include manslaughter and carrying a weapon on school property.

Rock is one of four people that New Orleans Police Superintendent Shaun Ferguson announced as wanted in the death of Augustine Greenwood. Greenwood had just watched her grandson graduate from high school when she was caught in the crossfire of an argument that escalated to gun violence.

"It absolutely makes no sense that we have to stand here today to speak to such a senseless, senseless act," Chief Ferguson said. "It is heart-wrenching to think about it."

Also wanted are 40-year-old Laverne Duplessis, 49-year-old Frank Bartholomew, and a 15-year-old.

Police say the shooting happened when a verbal altercation between two woman escalated to gunfire, outside Xavier University’s Convocation Center where the Morris Jeff Community School graduation ceremony was taking place.
