As the New Orleans City Council deals with the budget shortfall this year, they have two weeks left to come up with a budget for next year.

"It's triage now," said New Orleans City Council President J.P. Morrell.

Morrell says the council is still getting a handle on how lean the budget will be.

"We would have loved to have had $750-760 million in the budget, but when it's potentially $100 million or more less than that, some of the things that were on the collective wish lists of various organizations, some services that people have grown accustomed to that are non-essential, they're going to have to not be continued for the time being," Morrell said.

Millions of dollars in federal grants have expired -- and according to Morrell, that was money the Cantrell administration was using to staff some city hall jobs.

"The current mayor was trying to carry a lot of people that were funded by federal money using our general fund," he said. "Well, if the federal money for your position went away, we can't afford to keep you."

Morrell said some of the social programs the city provides will have challenges, as the council continues to figure out the city's money situation.

The council must pass a new budget by December 1.
