A recent public survey found most people in the region say New Orleans is going in the wrong direction.

David Marcello of the City Services Coalition, which commissioned the poll, says the survey also found the public wants to see more planning ahead from its leaders.

"Only two percent said that city departments were doing a good job coordinating public works projects, like streets and drainage," Marcello told WWL's Newell Normand. "When we asked about the criminal justice system, only ten percent said they felt that the police and the DA and the prison and the other players were doing a good job of coordinating their activities."

Marcello said the public knows its leaders can do better, and singled out the planning for Super Bowl LIX as an example.

"We got a very positive response: 72 percent more positive than negative thought we had done a good job managing the Super Bowl preparation," Marcello said. "One of the reasons for that is because Michael Hecht and others came together on a regular basis with meetings each week and consistently planned."

Marcello said they identified three ways public planning can be improved: by creating a "capital cabinet," so streets don't get torn up and repaved for one project, only to be torn up a few weeks later by another department's project; a public safety/justice council to coordinate criminal justice agencies' activities with the community; and a four-parish water purification project, set up river where sea water wouldn't be a threat when the Mississippi River is in its low stage.
