Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman says he is currently holding 40-individuals in his jail on looting charges.
The hard number comes as New Orleans Police Chief Shaun Ferguson has refused to release numbers of arrests for looting because he doesn't want to present a false narrative that New Orleans is out of control.
According to WWL-TV Mayor LaToya Cantrell has stated that several anti-looting measures are in place.
Cantrell says there was no significant level of looting in New Orleans and has stated that the city was coming together in this time of crisis.
"There is no widespread looting; there is widespread empathy and community cooperation," she said.
Currently about one half of the 390,000 residents left the city before Ida struck Sunday afternoon.
