Celebrations for Fourth of July tend to include fireworks and, though enjoyed by many, it is our fury friends who often can't take the noise.

It can be hard to determine why a pet may be scared of loud noises and to know how to help them if they are.

Dr. Claire Guichard with Lakeview Veterinary Hospital says the root causes vary but trauma and past experience seem to be prime indicators of your pet’s tendency to be scared.

“Sometimes, it is being surprised by a loud sound as a young animal, or inexperience if it is a pet who has never been around sudden sounds.”

So, what can you do if the animals in your life are scared for theirs? Here are five recommendations Dr. Guichard says to consider:

1)      Close curtains and blinds- The flashing lights can add to anxiety

2)      Crate them- Some animals may feel protected by this

3)      Offer high value snacks

4)      Play their favorite game

5)      Use white noise apps or turn the television up to drown out sound

Guichard says there are medication treatments as well and to consult your veterinarian to address specific concerns and to choose what will be best for your pet’s unique needs.
