Carjackings continue to plague the city of New Orleans with seven carjacking incidents in a three-day period.
Carjackings are on the rise across the entire city of New Orleans. According to the New Orleans City Council’s Crime Dashboard, carjackings are up 27% over last year, which saw 189 incidents compared to 2021’s 240 carjackings thus far.
The most recent series of carjackings started Saturday at around 12:14 a.m. in the 5200 block of N. Claiborne Avenue.
According to a New Orleans Police report, a 49-year-old man was giving a ride to two male suspects when the suspects suddenly took the keys out of the ignition and got out of the vehicle. The suspects attacked the victim and then fled in the victim’s car.
Later that night, in the 3000 block of Elysian Fields Avenue a 32-year-old woman was pumping gas when the suspects approached her. They pointed a gun at her and demanded her keys. She complied and they fled in her vehicle.
Later the same night, at about 8:33 p.m. a 28-year-old woman was sitting inside her vehicle in the 600 block of Independence Street, Police report the woman was approached by one of four male suspects who demanded she gets out of her vehicle.
She complied and the four subjects fled in her vehicle.
Then at about 8:54 p.m. in the 13400 block of Dwyer Boulevard, two male suspects approached a 70-year-old man. The man got into a physical struggle with one suspect. During that struggle, the man dropped his keys, which the second suspect picked up and fled in the victim’s car. The other suspect then fled on foot.
On Sunday morning, the carjackings continued with another carjacking in the 300 block of Canal Street. The NOPD did not report details on this incident.
Then on Monday, more carjackings. The first happened at 10:31 a.m. at the corner of Parc Brittany and Lake Forest Boulevards. Police say the male suspect approached the 49-year-old male victim, pointed a gun at him and ordered him from his vehicle. The man complied and the suspect fled in the victim's 2015 burgundy Chevy Silverado.
Then, at about 12:55 p.m. that day, a carjacking happened at the corner of Freret and Soniat Streets. Police say several male suspects approached a 23-year-old woman and one of the men ordered the woman out of her vehicle.
The suspect then fled in her car while the other suspects followed in a white Volvo reported stolen from the area yesterday. Police quickly apprehended the suspects shortly after the carjacking.
