Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry announces his office wants to join the civil lawsuit filed against New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell, City Health Director Jennifer Avegno, and the N.O. Health Department over a citywide vaccine mandate and mask requirement.

The State Attorney General petitioned a court to have the State of Louisiana intervene in Andrews v. Cantrell, which claims on behalf of 100 plaintiffs, that Cantrell’s vaccine mandate and mask requirement violates their civil liberties by restricting them from attending sporting events, and entering bars or restaurants unless they show proof of vaccination.

“Through her coercive tactics, the Mayor of New Orleans is trying to interfere with the healthcare choices of families,” said Attorney General Landry in a statement released Wednesday. “Like the Governor, who overrode the will of the people’s representatives and unlawfully mandated COVID shots on Louisiana’s students, the Mayor is abusing her office.”

“The parents, guardians, and - most importantly - the children who rely upon services in the Crescent City deserve much better,” added Landry. “I hope the lawsuit successfully ends this attempt to force a medical procedure on these citizens.”

New Orleans spokesperson Beau Tidwell maintains the city’s vaccine mandate saves lives.
