As Carnival heads into its biggest stretch, LSU Health climatologist Barry Keim says parade-goers should stay weather-aware but not worried. From now through Fat Tuesday, the forecast brings one soggy speed bump and a sunshine-filled finish.
Friday looks parade-friendly across the board. Keim says temperatures will hold steady and conditions should stay dry through the day and evening.
“Friday is in good shape,” Keim said. “It should remain dry, and you’ll likely only need a light jacket or sweater heading into the later evening hours.”
Saturday is the one day that could test your parade gear. Current projections show a 40 percent chance of rain between noon and six, increasing to a 60 percent chance between six and midnight. The tricky part is timing, especially for Endymion.
“The hope is that the rain holds off until after Endymion clears the route,” Keim said. “But there is a real chance some people could end up in the right parade spot and the wrong rain spot and get a pretty good soaking.”
His advice: don’t gamble, pack the poncho.
Whenever the rain begins, Keim says it will likely linger into Sunday but should move out in time for one of the biggest nights of the season.
“It should be cleared before Bacchus rolls Sunday evening,” he said. “After that, conditions look nice and clear. Bring a light sweater or jacket, but you won’t need the heavy artillery.”
Looking ahead to Lundi Gras and Fat Tuesday, the forecast turns downright festive.
“We’re talking sunshine and moderate temperatures in the low to mid-70s,” Keim said. “No rain in the forecast right now.”
His overall grade for the Carnival homestretch forecast?
“From here through Tuesday, I’d give it an A-minus.”
