An Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office deputy has been fired and arrested after investigators say he brought a firearm into the Orleans Justice Center.
According to the Sheriff's Office, Deputy Joseph Talton was taken into custody Saturday evening following an internal investigation.
The investigation began when a supervising officer noticed Talton carrying an unauthorized tote bag inside the jail facility. A search of the bag reportedly uncovered an unloaded firearm.
The OPSO Investigative Services Bureau immediately launched an inquiry and determined how the weapon was brought into the facility. Officials have not publicly released those details, citing the ongoing investigation.
Sheriff's Office officials said Talton's actions violated both agency policy and Louisiana law.
In a statement, OPSO said the administration remains committed to maintaining the safety and security of staff, visitors and detainees.
"This administration will continue working diligently to keep our facilities safe for OPSO staff, visitors and detainees," the agency said. "All violators will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law."
The investigation remains active.
