A recent decision tied to the Supreme Court of the United States and voting rights has led to changes in Louisiana’s election cycle, but officials say there are still important items on the ballot.
Political science department chair Ed Chervanak with the University of New Orleans says while some races have been paused, voters still have key decisions to make.
“There are still judicial races, five constitutional amendments, and the U.S. Senate race,” Sherman said.
That Senate race includes candidates Bill Cassidy, Julia Letlow, and John Fleming.
The biggest change comes in House races, which have been suspended following the redistricting ruling.
Governor Jeff Landry made the decision to pause those contests while legal questions are sorted out.
“It’s important for voters to understand that only the House races are affected,” Chervanak said. “The rest of the ballot remains intact.”
The ruling could also have longer-term implications for how elections are conducted in Louisiana.
“There may be renewed discussions about open primaries,” Sherman said.
Even with the changes, Sherman emphasizes that voter participation remains critical.
With early voting underway and Election Day approaching, officials are encouraging residents to stay informed and make their voices heard on the issues and races that remain on the ballot.
