Residents in St. Tammany Parish need to be aware to a ‘jury duty’ phone scam says STPSO Sheriff Randy Smith.
The Sheriff Smith says his agency received several reports about a caller telling people they face arrest because they missed jury duty. The caller tells people they can avoid arrest and begin the process of clearing the warrant, if they pay a fine. Smith says this is a phone scam and people who receive such a call should hang up.
Often the phone number shown on the caller ID is a spoof of actual phone numbers in an attempt to look legitimate.
Smith says the sheriff's office is not making these calls and does it make phone calls to collect fines or clear open warrants.
