Imagine taking a train for your next gulf shores vacation or even a day trip to the casino and being back home in time for dinner. That opportunity is closer than you think.
Train service from New Orleans through the Gulf Coast to Mobile could soon become a reality.
The area hasn't seen the light rail service since before Katrina. Now a coalition between Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama is set to change that.
Chairman of Southern Rail Commission, Knox Ross says the plans have been in the works for about fifteen years and they have a solid plan for bringing the service back.
“We did a study and found that starting with a route between New Orleans and Mobile twice a day, once in the morning and again in the evening, was best.”
The route is set for its inaugural ride as soon as February of 2025. However, Ross says the train won't stop there.
“The ultimate plan is for a person to be able to go from Baton Rouge to Mobile by train.”
