Cops recover 54 live and one dead dog from Kenner home

Investigators say they were "shocked" by what they found in a Kenner home.

"The Kenner Police Department and the Jefferson Protection & Animal Welfare Services (JPAWS) executed a search warrant at a residence in the 3500 block of Arizona Avenue," Kenner PD Posted.


They got a tip about an alleged illegal dog breeding operation.

"Upon entering the residence, officers and JPAWS personnel encountered deplorable conditions. Investigators located 54 living Australian Shepherd dogs and one deceased puppy."

They say many of the dogs were found in unsanitary conditions and appeared to be suffering from neglect.

They described extensive animal waste throughout the home,,matted fur, flea infestations, and more.

Officers found a "deceased puppy in an advanced state of decomposition."

JPAWS says the resident was advertising puppies for sale through social media and a website.

"Due to the animals' condition and welfare concerns, all 54 surviving dogs were seized by JPAWS."

Kenner Police arrested 50-year-old Shawn Bell, charging him with 55 felony counts of cruelty to animals.

“This puppy mill shocked experienced detectives and JPAW’s investigators. This investigation is ongoing, and we are now assessing other criminal charges for code and occupancy violations,” Kenner Police Chief Keith Conley said.
