St. Tammany Animal Services launched Operation Fight for 50 in a desperate attempt to get as many dogs adopted as possible by June 22nd to avoid being euthanized at the overcrowded shelter. According to Program Director Hayli Beebe, the public has stepped up in a major way and the effort has been a tremendous success.

“We have officially cancelled our mayday status. Operation Fight for 50 has been nothing but successful and we were able to get our last three animals committed to a rescue partner this morning. It’s been so rewarding to see so many adoptions and so many people stepping up,” Beebe says. She adds that many people have also stepped up to act as temporary foster homes and is pleasantly surprised by the response from the St. Tammany community.

Beebe does emphasize that even if overcrowding becomes an issue at the shelter again, St. Tammany Animal Services still screens every applicant to make sure all the animals go to good homes. While the shelter is now below capacity again, the public is always welcomed to stop by and see the potential pets currently housed there. “We love our community support. I would love for people to continue this momentum,” she added.

While St. Tammany Animal Services is now able to breathe a sigh of relief when it comes to their shelter numbers, Beebe notes that other shelters aren’t so lucky. “We really want to also shine a light over at Slidell as well. The Animal Assistance League, which is the municipal shelter for just within Slidell city limits, is still in crisis mode. They have adoption fees waived and still need help,” she went on to underscore.
