Anticipation of summer travel driving up gas demand, prices

With life inching back to normal, one of the normal things we didn't experience last year is here this year: gas prices going up as we approach Memorial Day.

GasBuddy.com's Patrick DeHaan says you see it every time you drive past a gas station.

"Prices really have continued to go up ahead of Memorial Day," said DeHaan, "about a dollar and twelve cents more than we were paying last year on an account of the recovery in demand."

DeHaan says the increase in demand has a notable starting point.

"It really started when we started to see vaccines be distributed," he explained. "A lot of it, American's have more destinations to choose from now."

DeHaan says it seems no one wants to stay close to home like they did last summer, but with international travel still limited, Americans will be hitting the road all over the country.
