Arson fires at Walmart and Home Depot in Jefferson Parish

Fire
3rd Dist. VFD

There were fires at two big retailers in Jefferson Parish this morning.

Someone set clothes on fire around 7:30am this morning at the Walmart on the Metairie/Kenner line.  The 3rd District Volunteer Fire Department responded.

Then around 8:00am, Kenner Fire responded after someone lit a door on fire at the Home Depot next door to the Walmart.

A pharmacist at the Walmart said that the store was closed, and they hoped to be open again tomorrow.

An employee at the tool rental department at Home Depot said that store remained open.

Kenner Police told WWL First News they had arrested a suspected arsonist.

A news release says, "The suspect is identified as Samir Hernandez, 23. He has been charged with two counts of Aggravated Arson, two counts of Aggravated Criminal Damage, two counts of Simple Arson and two counts of Simple Criminal Damage."

Kenner cops say Hernandez also set a pair of trash cans on fire in the neighborhood near the stores.

"Kenner Police responded to two trash can fires that were set in front of residences near the intersections of Filmore Street and Reverend Richard Wilson Boulevard and Roosevelt Boulevard and Airline Highway."
