Two baby golden lion tamarins born on Leap Day at the Audubon Nature Institute are now on display at the uptown zoo with their parents.
"The youngsters are aptly named “Skip” and “Hops” in honor of their unusual birthday," zoo spokesperson Melissa Lee announced.
The babies are the first offspring from the zoo's male and female golden lion tamarins Ipa (mother) and Picante (father).
The zoo made the announcement on Golden Lion Tamarin Day.
"Golden Lion Tamarin Day is celebrated each August 2 to raise awareness of these endangered animals," Lee said. "They are one of the most threatened primates in the world and are only found in a small part of lowland coastal rainforests in Brazil."
Skip, Hops, and their parents can be found in their glass-front enclosure at the zoo's World of Primates exhibit.
