Back to School season brings no relief at pump, despite lower demand

The kids are back in school, so summer road trip season is pretty much done. Will the change in demand be enough to affect the price of gasoline? No.

Gas prices have leveled off somewhat, but don't expect prices to retreat, says AAA spokesman Don Redman.

"I think that's going to be the normal throughout the remainder of the month, and maybe into September despite the fact that we're anticipating a drop in demand," said Redman.

With oil trading around 80 dollars a barrel, Redman says that's right where OPEC wants it. Redman says if China's economy starts to pick up, the price of oil could go even higher.

"If China's economy starts strengthening again, I think it's very absolutely possible we cold see oil prices hit $85-$90 a barrel before OPEC and other oil-producing countries decide to turn the spigots back on," Redman explained.

So in the meantime, Redman says drivers should get used to the prices they are paying now.

"We've been advising our AAA members to budget between $3.50 to $3.75 in the coming weeks," he said.
