Bayou Boogaloo brings the beat back to the bayou this weekend

Get ready to groove, paddle, and dance your way into summer! Bayou Boogaloo returns this weekend, bringing its signature mix of music, food, and waterfront charm to the banks of Bayou St. John.

The homegrown Mid-City festival has become a beloved rite of spring in New Orleans, where locals lounge on inflatables, boats, and rafts while the sounds of funk, soul, indie rock, brass, and bounce ripple across the water.

“Our festival is unique in that it takes place on the water in an urban setting,” says founder and producer Jared Zeller, who launched the event in 2006. “There’s really nothing else like it.”

This year’s Boogaloo promises a tightly curated lineup that emphasizes quality over size. “We decreased the footprint this year both because of financial reasons and concerns from the neighborhoods,” Zeller explains. “This allowed us to think quality over quantity.”

Longtime fans can expect fresh takes from favorite acts, alongside rising stars who may not be household names yet.

“We have bands that will do something different from some of their normal stuff,” Zeller says. “We had people before they were known and now we can’t afford them!”

Whether you’re floating in a kayak, dancing in the grass, or grabbing a cold drink under the oaks, this year’s Bayou Boogaloo is all about celebrating what makes New Orleans festivals magical: creativity, community, and a whole lot of rhythm.

Bayou Boogaloo runs Friday through Sunday along Bayou St. John near Orleans Avenue. Entry is free for kids under 12, and festival-goers are encouraged to bike, walk, or paddle in.
