President JP Morrell of the New Orleans City Council caught up with WWL’s Newell Normand this week about the investigation into mailers from Mayor LaToya Cantrell.

Last month, nola.com reported on a probe into the mailers, which touted Cantrell’s accomplishments. Normand noted that these mailers went out amid efforts to recall the mayor.

“Essentially, the concern began, as you noted, a while back when we saw what appeared to be a campaign style mailer,” said Morell. He said that he and other council members were concerned that the mailers might be in violation of a Louisiana state statute.

“There’s actually a state statute that criminalizes any use of public money to promote a person for power, for a political agenda, to do anything,” Morell explained. These concerns grew when an expert said the mailers might be illegal, he added.

While Morrell said Cantrell’s, office did eventually address the mailers, he also said it has been difficult to get information about them.
