A Cajun Navy Ground Force volunteer is now in jail after allegedly lying to authorities about being assaulted and nearly raped while working for the Cajun Navy in Lake Charles in the aftermath of Hurricane Laura back in June.
As The Advocate reports, the 45-year-old Rebecca Johnson told authorities she was supposedly pulled from her car, beaten subjected to attempted rape in what she said was a racially motivated attack.
Police say the woman’s story did not match up with surveillance video and investigator interviews.
Director and founder of the Cajun Navy, Rob Gaudet, did not comment on the case but did tell the newspaper that the Cajun Navy Ground Force is one organization allowed to use the Cajun Navy name.
“Of all the video that we've looked at, we were not able to find a single shred of video evidence of attackers, nor were we able to locate a witness who saw the attack,” Lake Charles Police Chief Shawn Caldwell said.
Deputy Chief Franklin Fondel said, “Through these interviews and video surveillance obtained from multiple sources, detectives were able to establish a timeline of Johnson's movement. This timeline, in addition to a number of statements obtained over the course of the investigation, revealed multiple inconsistencies in the information Johnson provided in her original victim's statement and follow-up interviews.”
Johnson was arrested Friday. She faces one count of filing a false report. She was released on a $25,000 bond.
