Thirty-three people have applied for the job of Superintendent of the New Orleans Police Department, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell announced Thursday.

The application period closed Friday, June 23.

The International Association of Chiefs of Police will screen the applicants, including performing screening interviews with applicants, to narrow down the pool of potential hirees.

"Thank you to IACP for continuing to lend a helping hand towards making an informed decision that is best for the residents and visitors of this great city," Cantrell said in a news release Thursday. "I welcome this next step and look forward to even more involvement as we move forward in identifying our new police chief."

An earlier news release from the city of New Orleans stated there were 27 applicants. The city sent an updated news release announcing 33 applicants for New Orleans Police Superintendent.
