New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell is taking part in the Yale Mayor’s College Conference that starts tomorrow in Washington, DC.
It comes amid a New Orleans City Council ban on city officials travelling with taxpayer money.
Cantrell's office says this trip is included in the ban.
"This annual conference was confirmed on the Mayor’s Office schedule well before the recent council ordinance," according to a news release.
The council banned trave through at least April after administration recently reported the city was facing a financial crisis.
Cantrell's office also claimed it could not fulfill plans to provide tax collections to the Orleans Parish School Board.
What happens at this meeting in DC?
"The Yale Mayor’s College Conference, organized by Yale University, provides an immersive learning environment for mayors nationwide," Cantrell's release said. "This event offers a valuable opportunity for leaders to interact and share best practices related to challenges facing metropolitan areas across America."
Cantrell is out of office in less than a year.
