Cantrell spokesperson to rebut allegations at Tuesday council meeting

Gregory Joseph
City of New Orleans

Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s communications director will be on the hot seat yet again on Tuesday. This time, his job is on the line.

The New Orleans City Council will hold a special meeting at 10 a.m. Tuesday to discuss a measure to remove Gregory Joseph from his city job. In September, the council concluded after a hearing that Joseph violated city policy and state law by using city funds to pay for a political mailer on behalf of Mayor LaToya Cantrell. Voters received that mailer in the midst of an effort to recall Cantrell from office.

The council also concluded that neither Cantrell nor her chief administrative officer, Gilbert Montaño, committed no wrongdoing because they did not know the extent of Joseph’s activities.

Cantrell and Joseph will have an opportunity to provide a defense and to rebut the council’s charges during Tuesday’s hearing. The council will then vote on October 16 on whether to remove Joseph from office.

If the council removes Joseph from his post, Cantrell would be able to rehire him. However, she would have to use her own personal funds to pay him for his work.
