Cantrell: In the city of New Orleans we will continue to wear masks

While the state moves into a more open mask policy, New Orleans will keep its mask mandate.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell says the city will be holding on to some of the existing mask mandates.

“In the city of New Orleans we will continue to have and wear masks,” Cantrell said Wednesday during a Q&A segment at a press conference on the reopening of Canal Street.

"We have to reach herd immunity in the city of New Orleans and we are not there," said Cantrell.

Cantrell says she will ease some of the restrictions to bring the city more in line with the latest round of statewide rules. The mayor is expected to make an official announcement on Thursday.

New Orleans has always had a mask mandate in place ahead of the state’s initial orders and has maintained stricter COVID-19 mitigation rules than the state’s rules throughout the pandemic.

Louisiana reports another 430 new cases of coronavirus and 15 new deaths today. Hospitalizations across the state fell slightly to 307.
