The New Orleans Police Department called in the SWAT team to an Uptown home where they say a man wanted in an alleged armed carjacking, barricaded himself inside.

This happened at about 8:00 am. In the 2100 block of Audubon Street.

NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson says they believe the suspect barricaded inside is 24-year-old Philip Barbarin. Ferguson says Barbarin is suspected in at least six armed carjackings and possibly a seventh carjacking that happened this morning on Broadway Street not far from the home where Barbarin barricaded himself.

“Now I must say this individual is a very violent individual,” said Ferguson “When victims did not comply he either fired at them and in one case he fired and stuck that individual.”

Barbarin is wanted on the following charges:

-Six counts of armed robbery with a firearm

-One count of aggravated assault with a firearm

-One count of aggravated second-degree battery

“Citizens are urged to avoid this area until police activity has concluded. Any residents living in the immediate area of this activity are urged to remain inside of their homes until police activity has concluded,” the NOPD said in an initial report.

The NOPD police parameter includes Broadway Street and S. Claiborne Ave.
