Federal authorities today formally announced the start of a new immigration enforcement crackdown in the New Orleans region.

The Department of Homeland Security  has dubbed the operation as "Catahoula Crunch."

Word broke in November that more than 200 border patrol agents would descend on Louisiana to round up illegal immigrants.

It had been referred to as "Swamp Sweep" in previous reports.

CBS News reported that many of the Border Patrol agents deployed to the Chicago region earlier this fall, including commander Gregory Bovino, were expected to participate in the upcoming operations in New Orleans.

In a statement to CBS News last month, the Department of Homeland Security said, "There have been too many victims of criminal illegal aliens, and President Trump and Secretary Noem will step up to protect Americans when sanctuary politicians won't."

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has been supporting the Trump administration immigration crackdown.

He was on hand to welcome federal leaders as they opened a wind at the Louisiana Penitentiary at Angola to house illegal immigrants.

Landry said he and President Trump are "helping make American and Louisiana safe again."
