A vehicle on fire and causing delays for traffic on the Crescent City Connection Bridge was the result of a police chase. Three suspects jumped from the fiery vehicle while it was still in motion according to police.
The chase started in Gretna and ended on the Tchoupitoulas Street exit ramp. Gretna Police say officers responded to a call of suspicious activity in the 900 block of Gulf Drive around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Residents in the area called police to report that people were going through neighbors’ yards in the area. Authorities say when officers arrived on the scene, three suspects jumped into a car and sped off. Officers pursued the suspects on US 90B. Sparks were reportedly flying from the vehicle as the chase crossed the Crescent City Connection Bridge into New Orleans.
When the vehicle began to smoke, the three suspects reportedly jumped out of the moving vehicle which kept rolling down the Tchoupitoulas exit ramp, and came to a rest before bursting into flames.
The exit ramp was closed as firefighters put out the vehicle fire. The crash and fire delayed early morning commuter traffic on the bridge. The ramp reopened around 7 a.m. All three suspects were arrested.
