Leelani Brooks, the 9-year-old girl struck in the head by a bullet as she fled gunfire on her street in Algiers, has died. The Orleans coroner's office announced today that Brooks died Friday.

Brooks had been on life support since the shooting that happened Monday afternoon, May 12. Police say she was running for cover when the shots rang out in the 2900 block of Lawrence St.

In the days following the shooting, doctors said the girl was brain dead.

The day after the shooting, police arrested 19-year-old Evans Rogers after a standoff at a Terrytown motel. Cops booked him on attempted second-degree murder in connection with the crime.

Charges may be upgraded now that the girl has died.
