Choppers flying low over New Orleans… to kill mosquitoes carrying virus

Have you noticed more mosquitoes lately? The city of New Orleans has.

Crews say they are finding elevated counts of Culex mosquito populations.


Those are the ones that carry West Nile virus.

So, exterminators are taking to the skies to kill the skeeters.

"Treatments will be conducted by helicopter and truck between 7:30 p.m. and 12 a.m.," according to a news release.

While they try to get rid of the threat, they are also taking samples.

"Weekly adult surveillance and testing for mosquito-borne diseases are ongoing throughout the parish. So far this year, two WNV-positive mosquito samples have been detected, but no human cases have been reported in Orleans Parish."

West Nile can be transmitted to humans and animals through the bite of an infected mosquito.

"West Nile and other mosquito-borne viruses are more active in the summer and early fall."

As we enter peak mosquito season, NOMTRCB encourages residents to take the following protective measures to reduce exposure:

Use repellents containing EPA-registered active ingredients such as DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Always follow product instructions.

Limit outdoor activities between dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.

Use air conditioning or sit in the airflow of a fan when possible.

Ensure window and door screens are in good condition to keep mosquitoes out of your home.

Dump standing water regularly to eliminate larval habitats around your property.
