Short term rentals once again come to the forefront as we're learning that there have had to be some exceptions to the rule of one Short Term Rental per block.
One councilman was at the forefront of advocating for the process for homeowners.
Freddie King, Councilman District C, says messages he received from the residents was loud and clear.
“I was hearing things like with inflation, rising insurance, and other expenses, having a short-term rental is how they make ends meet. So, I went to the council to propose an exceptions process.”
As part of that process, the council hears comment from neighbors who either advocate for a homeowner keeping their rental, or against an owner whom they have deemed a bad actor.
“We look to the public for input.”
King says though the process isn't easy, it is fair and transparent. “I take a human approach, get input from neighbors, consider the city planning reports to determine who gets the exception. And we are very transparent, we don’t want anyone to think the fix was in.”
The council will hear it's third round of exceptions this week. Information for the Short-Term Rental exception process can be found at the city's website at nola.gov
