The mayor of New Orleans is part of the Louisiana and American delegation to the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference. Mayor LaToya Cantrell is there with Governor John Bel Edwards discussing what Louisiana and New Orleans are doing about changing climate conditions in the region.
Cantrell says climate change is proving devastating for New Orleans.
“After I was sworn in as mayor, and on Mother’s Day, I had to be picked up in a high-water vehicle to meet with my Emergency Preparedness Team, because more than five inches of rain fell in two and a half hours over parts of my city,” said Cantrell in a speech at the conference. “These waters were not the result of a hurricane nor of a levee breach, they were the result of a single heavy rain event. I knew then that the impact of climate change would be the framing of my term as mayor of the city of New Orleans.”
Cantrell says she pledged her support in fighting climate change by working with an international coalition and she welcomed the help from the White House.
“And it reminds me of an American singer, Teddy Pendergrass when he says, it is so good loving somebody, when somebody loves you back,” said Cantrell.
