Now that Republicans have claimed the Presidency and the Senate, and all signs point to a sweep of the House as well, the next administration is in line to make decisions that could fundamentally change the country.
Professor of law at Loyola, Dane Ciolino says that the possible, maybe even inevitable, exit of Supreme Court Justice Sonya Sotomayor could set up the Trump administration to further cement the Supreme Court.
"Democrats tried to urge [Sotomayor] to retire while they still had control of the Senate. That did not happen leaving the possibility that she could vacate sometime within the next four years."
Justice Sotomayor isn't the only one nearing retirement age. Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito may also leave their robes behind
"I wouldn't be surprised if we hear calls from Republicans for them to retire so that President Trump could have a chance to appoint someone younger who fits the mold."
And what is the mold? Well, we can look to recent history for that and it is approaching our backyard.
"The historic decision on abortion and affirmative action are examples of the legal challenges that would take place. And, right in Louisiana, the court will take up the issue of the newly drawn majority black district."
