Bourbon Street should become a pedestrians-only thoroughfare from Canal St. to Dumaine St., according to security consultants hired by the city.

Their reports also call for increasing security along Mardi Gras parade routes, NOLA.com reports.

A preliminary report presented last month to residents and business owners received pushback on those recommendations.

Teneo, the consulting firm, said it will ultimately be up to the people of New Orleans to decide what is best, but said anything less than a permanent pedestrian mall only increases the risk of an attack similar to the events of New Year's Day, when a self-radicalized terrorist plowed a rented pickup truck through a crowd for about three blocks, before he was killed by police.

Fourteen people died in the attack and dozens more were injured.
