Cops bust pickpocket ring in the French Quarter, recover many stolen items

NOPD says a Mardi Gras pickpocketing scheme has ended with arrests and recoveries.

"The New Orleans Police Department’s Eighth District is investigating an increase in pickpocketing incidents," according to a news release.

Investigators say the thefts started this past Friday.

"As a result of this investigation, detectives have recovered 71 cell phones, numerous identification cards, and credit cards believed to have been stolen during these incidents."

Police say five suspects have been arrested:

Christian Noela, Hispanic female, DOB: 10-28-1994
Rosa Freire, Hispanic female, DOB: 07-14-966
Fernanda Almagro, Hispanic female, DOB: 01-09-2002
Joselyn Soque, Hispanic female, DOB: 06-01-1996
Andres Ambo Chacaguasay, Hispanic male, DOB: 02-09-2008

Detectives been able to return property to some victims.

"They are still working to match ownership information for several recovered items."

NOPD says if your cell phone or phone case may be among the recovered property, you should contact the Eighth District Station at 504-658-6080.  You can also visit the Eighth District station in person at 334 Royal Street.

"The station is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week."
