New details are emerging in the death of former LSU football player Kyren Lacy.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office in Texas says Lacy shot himself while police were chasing him.

A news release says the incident started Saturday night.

"On April 12th, 2025, at approximately 11:15 p.m., deputies with the Harris County Pct. 4 Constable’s Office responded to a weapons disturbance call in 9300 block of FM 1960," authorities stated. "The reportee in the case stated that her family member, later identified by her as 24 year old Kyren Lacy, was involved in a verbal argument with her, and had discharged a firearm into the ground."

Investigators say when police arrived on scene they learned Lacy had fled the scene.

"At approximately 11:35 p.m., a Pct. 4 Constable’s Office unit spotted Lacy and attempted to make a traffic stop on the vehicle. Lacy then fled and a vehicle pursuit took place spanning several miles. Near the 25900 block of Aldine Westfield, the suspect vehicle crashed."

The HCSO says when police approached the car, they found Lacy dead.

"Pursuing Pct. 4 units, upon attempting to take Lacy into custody and remove him from the vehicle, discovered he had suffered what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Lacy was pronounced deceased at the scene by EMS personnel. The vehicle Lacy was driving was registered and insured in his name."

The sheriff’s office says Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Units conducted an investigation.

"Preliminary information indicates Lacy shot himself during the pursuit and prior to the vehicle crashing. A handgun was recovered from the interior of the vehicle. A review of the Pct. 4 units body camera and in car dash mounted video did not indicate any shots were fired after the pursuit ended."

A grand jury in Louisiana was supposed to hear the case against Lacy on Monday.

In January, Lafourche Parish authorities arrested Lacy in connection with a deadly crash that happened on December 17 in Chackbay. State troopers accused him of causing the crash by speeding and passing several cars in a no-passing zone, forcing one driver to swerve off the road and another to swerve into an oncoming car. Troopers also accused Lacy of speeding away from the scene. A 78-year-old passenger in one of the vehicles died.

Lacy, a graduate of Thibodaux High School, transferred to LSU in 2022 after playing two seasons at the University of Louisiana. As a freshman at UL, Lacy helped the Ragin’ Cajuns to a Sun Belt Championship and a victory in the First Responder Bowl.

Last year at LSU, Lacy was a second-team all SEC selection in 2024, led the SEC in touchdowns, and participated in the Senior Bowl. In three seasons with the Tigers, Lacy started 24 games and caught 102 passes for 1,692 yards and 16 touchdowns.
