The New Orleans City Council voted 6-0 Tuesday to approve the New Orleans Police Department occupying three floors of the DXC Technology building at 1615 Poydras St. as a new command headquarters.
NOPD Chief Ann Kirkpatrick and top officials in the Cantrell administration sought the move as the existing NOPD HQ, in use since the 1960s, has been beset with maintenance issues.
"It's even health issues such as mold, heavy mold in theses buildings, rodent infestation," said Kirkpatrick. "People shouldn't have to come to their office and see rodent drippings on their desk."
The lease at 1615 Poydras is for ten years, with an option to vacate after five. If the NOPD stays there the full ten years, the total cost would be $12.4 million.
