Council can take action against Cantrell

The contention between the city council and the mayor's office reached a fever pitch this week.

The council instituted a travel ban to which Mayor LaToya Cantrell did not adhere and proceeded to attend a conference in Washington D.C.

Now the ball is seemingly in the council's court; begging the questions, what can they do about her violation of the travel ban, and how will this relationship unfold until the end of her term?

Dr. Ed Chervanak, Political Pollster and Political Science Professor at UNO, says that there is definitely one card the council could play.

"The city council has the power of the purse. They could financially penalize the mayor's office."

As for the foreseeable future of the business of the city being handled, that depends heavily on the attitude the mayor's office will take.

"We'll see if they continue with an attitude of entitlement or if they will prioritize the needs of the constituents."

Cantrell has a little over 300 days left before she is term limited out of office.

How far the city council goes to cut off her spending is unclear.
