A hearing at New Orleans City Hall today seeks to find some answers about how a murder suspect, already convicted of multiple violent acts and accused of several more, could get his bond reduced.
New Orleans City Council Criminal Justice Committee chairman Jay Banks says he wants answers on how the bond was reduced for Bryan Andry, accused of murdering 60-year-old Portia Pollack last week in a carjacking.
"A bond reduction for someone accused of, not only accused but who has a history, of violent acts against other people. I think there should be a far more stringent process," said Banks,
Banks says the council may be limited in what action it can take in a criminal case already pending before a court, but they can at least air it out for the public.
"We need to make sure that however this happened, with an offender with a violent history against people, doesn't get that same opportunity again," he said.
Andry was booked last year in connection with a pair of armed robberies, and was supposed to be wearing an electronic monitoring device as a condition of his release.
The hearing starts at 10:00 a.m. in the council meeting room at New Orleans City Hall.
