Council convenes again to consider terminating mayor's top spokesman

Joseph
City of New Orleans

Members of the New Orleans City Council today try again to remove Mayor LaToya Cantrell's communications director, Gregory Joseph. He is accused of lying to the council about using city funds to pay for an election-style mailer promoting Cantrell during last year's failed recall campaign.

It will only take a simple majority of the council to remove Gregory Joseph, but the administration is backing him to the very end.

"The council and the administration have both dug in their heels, each side, respectively, saying 'I'm right, you're wrong,'" said political analyst Clancy DuBos.

The council put off the removal vote two weeks ago, when the city attorney, who said she was acting in a limited capacity on Joseph's behalf, asked for a continuance so Joseph could hire a new lawyer. The council begrudgingly agreed, but council president J.P. Morrell indicated he was running out of patience, and further continuance request might not be granted.
