Recent disagreements between the New Orleans city council and the mayor has the council president considering a charter change.

Before the council voted last week to override the mayor's veto of a settlement with Tulane University over the Wisner trust, they received an opinion from the city attorney taking the mayor's side.

Council president J.P. Morrell told WWL's Newell Normand that it is not the city attorney's job to choose sides when there's a disagreement between the mayor and council,

Now he wants voters to settle the matter with a charter change.

"Our charter is not explicit enough in laying out that the city attorney's role is to represent the city, and not the mayor," said Morrell.  "We spend a tremendous amount of money, Newell, on lawyers to defend us because the city attorney has chosen not to."
