JP Morrell becomes the first New Orleans City Councilmember to public demand NOPD Chief Shaun Ferguson’s ouster amidst a rise in violent crime. Morrell told WWL’s Tommy Tucker this morning that Ferguson has lost the confidence of his officers and is presiding over a mass exodus.

“We need to change the Chief, that’s just the way it is, and when you talk to the rank and file officers, who are still here, the ones who haven’t left yet, they feel hopeless,” said Morrell who noted Jefferson Parish and State Police are both ramping up recruitment efforts that could siphon future officers away.

Morrell said NOPD officers are leaving the NOPD for a pay cut.

“The numbers in which they leaving under this leadership tell you it is a leadership problem,” said Morrell, who compared attrition under Ferguson to past administrations.

According to the NOPD website, NOPD pay after one year on the force is $56,566.

Morrell called the Mayor and Chief’s crime plan laid out at a news conference yesterday inadequate and touted a plan by the City Council that was released this afternoon.
